Tea-guzzling hip-hoppers Rizzle Kicks are our favourite rap duo of the year. Yeah, sorry Jay-Z and Kanye…
A pair of Brit School graduates, Rizzle Kicks avoid the polished pop you might usually expect from the respected fame institution, instead favouring a self-depricating urban sound which manages to be both brilliantly British and super smooth. ‘Down With The Trumpets’ is the perfect introduction to their unique sound and a stunning summer smash with its infectious brass samples, catchy chorus and brilliant vocals from Jordan ‘Rizzle’ and Harley ‘Sylvester’.
Opening with a retro-sounding trumpet sample, the boys discuss a few true-facts about British life – grass-stained trainers, how rubbish Neighbours really is, snooty girls and while they’re at it, the duo offer tips on how to keep the party going when winter comes. The track mixes Jordan’s relaxed rapping with Harley’s effortlessly smooth singing voice as they bounce off each other throughout the song, resulting in a truly distinct sound that sets them apart from the rest of the UK urban pack. Their pop leanings have already led to appearances on Jessie J’s ‘Price Tag’ as well as Olly Murs forthcoming single, ‘Heart Skips A Beat’.
With ‘Down With The Trumpets’, the boys are making their mark on the UK music scene as everyday rappers, and having grown up in Brighton, their friendly swagger is a far cry from the chart-friendly aggression of N-Dubz, Devlin or Professor Green. Must be all that sea air.
